Photography, The big bounce theory
One light photography should be the fundamental on all imagery, obvious to some but amazing how many photographers create a whole World of complications by starting out with 2, 3 even 4 lights, painful to stay the least!
So here on my tuition days at Brussels Street Studio in Leeds City centre you only get to use one light, the rest are locked away to avoid any temptation, I do however allow the use of reflectors or any white or black wall in the studio.
The example attached is of a cosmetics brand and is shot with one light and 2 studio flats, this is why I call this set up the big bounce theory, there’s no light hitting the products, using angles of reflection you can avoid any unwanted specular highlights which in my opinion destroys an image, it’s the first thing your eye sees.
So to conclude, if in doubt bounce light back into your subject, it works great for products as well as portraits and beauty photography, try it out and if you get lost email me and most of all it’s not a race, take your time and get it right, you’ll be glad you did!
